A response to Mark Zuckerberg's vision of AI for everyone


Mark Zuckerberg recently outlined a vision for the future of artificial intelligence built around the idea of personal superintelligence — a future where every person has access to an AI companion capable of helping with health, education, creativity, business, research, and daily life.

It is an ambitious and optimistic vision.

Rather than imagining AI as a force that replaces humanity, Zuckerberg describes AI as a tool that could expand human capability. He argues that the future should not belong to a small group of institutions controlling intelligence from above, but to individuals empowered with extraordinary tools.

This is an important conversation.

The question of who has access to intelligence — and who controls it — will shape much of the future.

But beneath that question lies another, perhaps even more important one:

If every person has access to extraordinary intelligence, what will guide that intelligence?

The future of AI may not ultimately be determined by how intelligent our machines become.

It may be determined by how wise humanity becomes.


Intelligence Abundance Is Coming

Throughout history, technological advances have repeatedly expanded human capability.

The printing press multiplied access to knowledge.

The computer multiplied our ability to calculate and process information.

The internet multiplied our ability to communicate.

The smartphone placed unprecedented computing power into billions of hands.

Artificial intelligence represents another major transition.

For the first time, individuals may have access not only to information, but to something closer to a personal intellectual partner — a system that can help them learn, create, analyze, design, plan, and solve problems.

A person who previously needed a team of experts may increasingly be able to accomplish extraordinary things alone.

A small business owner may operate with capabilities once reserved for large corporations.

A student may have access to personalized instruction.

An inventor may explore ideas that previously would have required significant resources.

An artist may create worlds that once required entire studios.

This is a genuinely exciting possibility.

But every previous technological revolution has revealed the same pattern:

Tools amplify the person using them.

They do not automatically transform the person using them.


Intelligence Is Not Wisdom

A calculator gave people the ability to perform mathematics faster.

It did not make people wise in how they used numbers.

The internet gave humanity access to nearly unlimited information.

It did not automatically make humanity more truthful.

Social media connected billions of people.

It did not automatically make humanity more relational.

Technology increases capability.

It does not guarantee maturity.

Artificial intelligence will likely be the most powerful cognitive tool humanity has ever created.

That means the central question cannot only be:

"How intelligent can AI become?"

We must also ask:

"What kind of humans will wield that intelligence?"

A person with greater intelligence and greater wisdom can use power to create, heal, and serve.

A person with greater intelligence but poor character can use the same power to manipulate, exploit, and destroy.

The difference is not intelligence.

The difference is formation.


The Missing Layer: Human Formation

Much of today's AI discussion focuses on technical alignment:

How do we make AI systems behave correctly?

How do we prevent harmful outputs?

How do we ensure AI follows human values?

These questions matter.

But there is another dimension of alignment that receives far less attention:

How do we help humans become aligned?

An AI assistant can help a person achieve goals.

But which goals?

A personal AI can optimize a person's productivity.

But toward what purpose?

A superintelligent assistant can help someone win.

But should every victory be pursued?

These are not merely technical questions.

They are questions of wisdom, purpose, and character.

The challenge of the AI age is not simply creating intelligent machines.

It is cultivating wise humans.


The Servant, the Steward, and the Ruler

One way to understand the challenge is through the relationship between authority and responsibility.

A healthy AI relationship begins with the model of a servant:

"I help you accomplish your purposes."

A more advanced relationship resembles a steward:

"I help manage resources and responsibilities entrusted to you."

The danger comes when the role shifts toward ruler:

"I know what is best, and I will direct your life."

The distinction is subtle but essential.

A good servant increases human agency.

A good steward supports human responsibility.

A ruler replaces human responsibility.

The goal should not be AI that becomes humanity's decision-maker.

The goal should be AI that helps humanity become better decision-makers.


The Worldview Behind the Intelligence

Every AI system contains assumptions about the world.

Every system has priorities.

Every system reflects beliefs about:

  • what matters,
  • what success means,
  • what human flourishing looks like,
  • what tradeoffs are acceptable.

The question is not whether AI will have a worldview.

The question is whether that worldview will be visible, understandable, and accountable.

This is why the development of AI requires more than engineering.

It requires philosophy.

It requires ethics.

It requires wisdom.

At aiEthos, we describe this foundational layer as a Worldview Kernel — the underlying framework that shapes how intelligence is directed.

The purpose is not to force every person into one worldview.

Human beings are diverse.

The purpose is to recognize that intelligence without guiding principles is incomplete.

Capability requires direction.

Understanding requires wisdom.


The Future Is Not Artificial Intelligence Alone

The greatest promise of AI is not that machines will become more like humans.

The greatest promise is that humans may become more capable of fulfilling their unique potential.

AI may help us:

  • learn faster,
  • create more freely,
  • solve difficult problems,
  • discover new scientific breakthroughs,
  • care for one another more effectively.

But the measure of success will not be how powerful our tools become.

It will be whether those tools help us become more fully human.

The future should not be defined by artificial intelligence replacing humanity.

It should be defined by intelligence — artificial and human — working together toward wisdom, creativity, and flourishing.

Personal superintelligence is an extraordinary possibility.

But personal superintelligence requires something even more important:

personal wisdom.

The future belongs not merely to those who have access to greater intelligence.

It belongs to those who know what intelligence is for.

Before Regulation: The Missing Layer in the AI Debate

As artificial intelligence enters public political debate ahead of upcoming election cycles, much of the discussion has focused on speed, regulation, and national competitiveness. This essay does not argue for or against specific policies. Instead, it examines what the current debate reveals — and what may be missing from it. The goal is not to slow innovation or accelerate it, but to clarify the deeper questions that must be addressed if AI is to earn long-term public trust.


As artificial intelligence moves from research labs into daily life, it has also moved—inevitably—into politics. What was once a technical conversation among engineers and ethicists is now emerging as a defining public issue ahead of upcoming election cycles.


Recent reporting has framed this moment as a clash between two camps: those urging rapid deployment of AI under a light federal framework, and those calling for stronger regulation, export controls, and precaution. The debate is often described as acceleration versus restraint, innovation versus safety, or federal uniformity versus state authority.

These are serious questions. But they are not the deepest ones.

Beneath the policy arguments lies a more fundamental issue—one that neither side is fully addressing.


Two Visions, One Shared Assumption

Pro-innovation advocates emphasize speed, competitiveness, and national advantage. Their concern is that fragmented regulation or excessive caution could slow progress, weaken economic leadership, or cede strategic ground to geopolitical rivals. From this perspective, AI is a powerful tool, and the greatest risk lies in failing to deploy it fast enough.

On the other side, regulation-focused advocates stress accountability, safety testing, transparency, and public trust. They argue that unrestrained deployment risks harm, backlash, and loss of legitimacy—and that once trust is lost, recovery is far more difficult than prevention. From this view, AI is powerful precisely because it is dangerous if mishandled.

Despite their differences, both camps share a core assumption:

That the central question is how AI should be governed once it exists. 

This framing treats intelligence as primary, and governance as something layered on afterward—through regulation, oversight, incentives, or enforcement.

What’s missing is a prior question.


The Question Before Governance

Long before societies debate how to regulate power, they implicitly decide what kind of power they are willing to inhabit.

History offers many examples where systems were technically impressive yet socially destructive—not because they lacked rules, but because they lacked formation. They were powerful, but not oriented toward the good in any coherent way.

AI introduces a new version of this problem.

Unlike previous technologies, advanced AI systems:

  • interpret language 
  • simulate reasoning 
  • model human behavior 
  • shape perception and attention 
  • influence decisions at scale
     

These are not neutral functions. They are relational functions.

The issue, then, is not merely whether AI is fast or safe, centralized or decentralized. It is whether intelligence—artificial or otherwise—can be deployed at scale without a shared moral grammar.


Why Public Anxiety Is Rational

Polls and public commentary often describe widespread “anxiety” about AI. This is sometimes dismissed as fear of the unfamiliar or resistance to change. But anxiety is not the same as ignorance.

Anxiety arises when people sense that:

  • power is increasing faster than understanding 
  • agency is shifting without consent 
  • systems are shaping behavior without accountability 
  • intelligence is being separated from responsibility
     

In other words, the concern is not that AI exists—but that it exists without a clear answer to the question: Aligned with what?

Neither rapid deployment nor strict regulation alone answers that.


Alignment Is Not Just a Technical Problem

Much of the AI safety discussion revolves around “alignment”—usually framed as ensuring that systems follow human instructions, avoid harmful outputs, or conform to predefined rules.

These efforts are necessary. But they are insufficient.

Alignment is not simply about:

  • constraints 
  • filters 
  • guardrails 
  • compliance checklists
     

Those mechanisms assume that the values to be aligned to are already coherent.

Yet modern societies are deeply divided about:

  • what constitutes harm 
  • whose interests matter most 
  • how tradeoffs should be made 
  • what responsibility even means in complex systems
     

Without addressing that layer, alignment becomes brittle—technically enforced but morally thin.


A Third Axis: Formation

The current debate is often presented as a binary:

  • Accelerate or constrain 
  • Deploy or delay
     

But there is a third axis that precedes both:

Formation — the question of how intelligence is shaped before it is scaled. 

Formation asks:

  • What assumptions are embedded in systems before deployment? 
  • What models of the human person are being used? 
  • What incentives shape behavior when rules are ambiguous? 
  • What happens when objectives conflict?


Formation is not regulation after the fact.
It is orientation before power is exercised.

This concept is well understood in other domains. We expect leaders, judges, physicians, and pilots to undergo formation—not merely to follow rules, but to internalize judgment, responsibility, and restraint.

As AI systems increasingly mediate human life, the absence of an equivalent concept becomes conspicuous.


Why Regulation Alone Cannot Carry the Load

Regulation is essential. But regulation:

  • reacts to harms already visible 
  • struggles with rapidly evolving systems 
  • is constrained by jurisdictional boundaries 
  • cannot encode wisdom, only rules
     

Likewise, market incentives alone:

  • optimize for speed and scale 
  • reward measurable outputs over intangible goods 
  • tend to externalize long-term social costs
     

Both approaches assume that misalignment can be corrected downstream.

History suggests otherwise.

Systems that lack internal orientation tend to drift toward the narrowest objectives allowed—especially under competitive pressure.


Toward Inhabited Alignment

What is needed is not a pause in innovation, nor blind acceleration, but a shift in emphasis:

From control to character
From oversight to orientation
From rules alone to inhabited values

This does not mean encoding ideology into machines. It means acknowledging that intelligence—human or artificial—does not exist in a vacuum. It always expresses the assumptions, priorities, and blind spots of those who design and deploy it.

Making those assumptions explicit, examinable, and coherent is not a luxury. It is a prerequisite for trust.


A Moment of Choice

The emerging political debate around AI is a sign of maturity, not panic. It reflects a shared intuition that something consequential is underway.

But if the conversation remains confined to speed versus safety, federal versus state authority, or innovation versus regulation, it will miss the deeper issue—and repeat familiar mistakes.

Before we decide how AI should be governed, we must ask how intelligence itself should be formed.

That question is older than technology.
And more urgent than policy.

In this essay, formation refers to the orientation of intelligence before it is scaled or deployed.

Formation is not:

  • regulation after harm occurs 
  • content moderation or filtering 
  • ideological programming 

Formation is:

  • the assumptions embedded in systems at design time 
  • the models of human behavior and value used to guide decisions 
  • the priorities that shape outcomes when rules are insufficient or in conflict
     

Every powerful system reflects the character of what formed it.
The question is not whether AI will shape human life — but what has shaped AI before it does.
